Manage GCP Identity-Aware Proxy Tunnel Destination Group IAM Policies

The gcp:iap/tunnelDestGroupIamPolicy:TunnelDestGroupIamPolicy resource, part of the Pulumi GCP provider, manages IAM policies for Identity-Aware Proxy tunnel destination groups, controlling who can access specific tunnel endpoints. This guide focuses on four capabilities: authoritative policy replacement, role-based binding management, non-authoritative member grants, and time-based IAM Conditions.

These resources reference existing tunnel destination groups and operate at different levels of control. TunnelDestGroupIamPolicy replaces the entire policy, TunnelDestGroupIamBinding manages all members for one role, and TunnelDestGroupIamMember adds individual members. The examples are intentionally small. Choose the resource that matches your management model and combine it with your own tunnel groups.

Replace the entire IAM policy for a tunnel group

When you need complete control over access, TunnelDestGroupIamPolicy replaces the entire IAM policy with your specified bindings.

The getIAMPolicy data source constructs the policy document with role-to-members mappings. The TunnelDestGroupIamPolicy resource applies this policy to the tunnel group identified by project, region, and destGroup. This approach is authoritative: it removes any bindings not included in policyData.

Grant a role to multiple members at once

TunnelDestGroupIamBinding manages all members for a single role while preserving other roles in the policy.

The role property specifies which IAM role to manage. The members array lists all identities that should have this role. Other roles in the tunnel group’s policy remain unchanged, but this resource owns the complete member list for roles/iap.tunnelResourceAccessor.

Add a single member to a role non-authoritatively

TunnelDestGroupIamMember adds one member to a role without affecting other members or roles.

The member property (singular) specifies one identity to grant access. Unlike TunnelDestGroupIamBinding, this resource doesn’t claim ownership of the full member list. You can use multiple TunnelDestGroupIamMember resources for the same role, or combine them with TunnelDestGroupIamBinding resources for different roles.

IAM Conditions add temporal or attribute-based constraints to permissions, such as expiring access after a specific date.

The condition block adds constraints to the binding. The expression uses CEL (Common Expression Language) to define when the binding applies. Here, request.time checks the current timestamp against a deadline. The title and description provide human-readable context. Conditions work with all three IAM resource types (Policy, Binding, Member).

Beyond these examples

These snippets focus on specific IAM management features: authoritative vs non-authoritative management, role-based and member-based access control, and time-based IAM Conditions. They’re intentionally minimal rather than full access control configurations.

The examples reference pre-existing infrastructure such as IAP tunnel destination groups and GCP projects and regions. They focus on IAM policy configuration rather than provisioning the tunnel groups themselves.

To keep things focused, common IAM patterns are omitted, including:

  • Attribute-based conditions beyond time (resource tags, request attributes)
  • Multiple conditions per binding
  • Service account impersonation patterns
  • Cross-project IAM delegation

Which IAM resource type should I use for managing tunnel destination group access?

Choose based on your management style:

Why am I getting IAM policy conflicts between my resources?
gcp.iap.TunnelDestGroupIamPolicy cannot be used with gcp.iap.TunnelDestGroupIamBinding or gcp.iap.TunnelDestGroupIamMember because they’ll conflict over policy management. Choose either Policy (authoritative) or Binding/Member (granular).
Can I use TunnelDestGroupIamBinding and TunnelDestGroupIamMember together?
