Configure GCP Identity-Aware Proxy IAM Bindings

The gcp:iap/webCloudRunServiceIamBinding:WebCloudRunServiceIamBinding resource, part of the Pulumi GCP provider, manages IAM role bindings for Identity-Aware Proxy (IAP) protected Cloud Run services. This guide focuses on three capabilities: authoritative role bindings for multiple members, non-authoritative single-member grants, and time-based access with IAM Conditions.

IAM bindings reference existing Cloud Run services and require IAP to be enabled on the project. The examples are intentionally small. Combine them with your own Cloud Run services and identity management workflows.

Grant a role to multiple members at once

The WebCloudRunServiceIamBinding resource is authoritative for the specified role: it replaces any existing members for that role. The members array accepts various identity formats including users, service accounts, groups, and special identifiers like allAuthenticatedUsers. The cloudRunServiceName identifies which Cloud Run service to protect.

Add a single member to an existing role

When onboarding individual users, teams use non-authoritative member resources to add identities without affecting others already granted the same role.

The WebCloudRunServiceIamMember resource adds a single identity to a role without replacing existing members. This is useful for incremental access grants where you don’t want to manage the complete member list. Use member (singular) instead of members (plural) to specify one identity.

Apply time-based access with IAM Conditions

Organizations with temporary contractors or time-limited projects use IAM Conditions to automatically expire access.

The condition block adds temporal constraints to role grants. The expression uses CEL (Common Expression Language) to define when access is valid; here, access expires at midnight on 2020-01-01. The title identifies the condition in audit logs and the GCP console. IAM Conditions work with both binding and member resources.

Beyond these examples

These snippets focus on specific IAM binding features: role-based access control (binding vs member resources) and IAM Conditions for time-based access. They’re intentionally minimal rather than complete access control configurations.

The examples reference pre-existing infrastructure such as Cloud Run services and a GCP project with IAP enabled. They focus on configuring IAM bindings rather than provisioning the underlying services.

To keep things focused, common IAM patterns are omitted, including:

  • Policy resource (authoritative full policy replacement)
  • Condition expressions beyond time-based (attribute-based, resource-based)
  • Custom role definitions
  • Federated identity and workload identity pool configuration

What's the difference between Policy, Binding, and Member resources for IAP?
Three resources manage IAM policies with different behaviors: gcp.iap.WebCloudRunServiceIamPolicy is authoritative and replaces the entire policy, gcp.iap.WebCloudRunServiceIamBinding is authoritative for a specific role (preserves other roles), and gcp.iap.WebCloudRunServiceIamMember is non-authoritative (adds individual members without affecting others).
Can I use Policy with Binding or Member resources?
No, gcp.iap.WebCloudRunServiceIamPolicy cannot be used with gcp.iap.WebCloudRunServiceIamBinding or gcp.iap.WebCloudRunServiceIamMember because they will conflict over policy management.
Can I use Binding and Member resources together?
